Christian Medical College hospital brings patients from across India, especially the east and north-east, to Vellore, sustaining a large economy of lodges, pharmacies, eateries and travel services around it. VIT adds a big student population, and the surrounding region, including Ambur, Vaniyambadi and Ranipet, is a major centre for finished leather and leather footwear exports.
