Steel dominates the district: JSW Steel's Vijayanagar works at Toranagallu, one of India's largest single-location steel plants, runs on iron ore from the Sandur hills, as do sponge-iron and pellet units nearby. Ballari is also a long-established jeans-making cluster, with small units doing cutting, stitching and washing for brands and traders, and a coal-fired power station operates nearby.
