At the head of the Krishna delta, Vijayawada grew as a railway junction and wholesale market for coastal Andhra. Its Autonagar is a large cluster of lorry-body builders, vehicle workshops and spare-parts dealers, while traders move rice, mangoes from the Nunna market, textiles and fuel from oil-company depots. Cement, food processing, education and a small IT sector round out the economy.
