German-era brewing survives in Windhoek Lager, still made here under the old purity law, but today's economy runs on government, banking and the head offices of mining companies. Most consumer goods arrive by road from South Africa or through Walvis Bay to wholesalers in the Northern and Southern Industrial Areas, and the city is the starting point for safari and lodge tourism.
