01 — Local economy
Business in Washington, D.C.
Federal agencies are the region's largest customer, and the businesses that serve them, from Beltway IT integrators and consultancies to law firms, lobbying shops and trade associations, define the private economy. Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics and Boeing have headquarters in the Maryland and Virginia suburbs, Loudoun County's Data Center Alley is the world's largest data-center market, and the World Bank, IMF, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac keep finance and development work in the region.
Also known as DC, Washington DC and District of Columbia.
Where software helps: Washington trade associations and nonprofits manage membership dues, conference registrations, sponsorships and restricted grant funds, often in separate systems, which makes renewals, fund accounting and board reporting slow.
