Tanneries along the Ganga at Jajmau make Kanpur one of India's main leather centres, supplying finished leather, saddlery, harnesses and footwear to domestic and export buyers. Ordnance factories and HAL's transport-aircraft division make defence work significant, and the city also produces fertilisers, detergents, pan masala, plastics and textiles in industrial areas such as Panki and Dada Nagar, while its markets serve central Uttar Pradesh.
