Business in Varanasi
Banarasi silk saris, woven on handlooms and powerlooms in neighbourhoods such as Madanpura and sold through the city's gaddidar traders, are Varanasi's best-known product. The city is a major pilgrimage centre with a large hotel, boat and religious-goods economy, the Banaras Locomotive Works builds electric locomotives, and nearby Bhadohi and Mirzapur form India's main hand-knotted carpet belt. Wooden toys and glass beads are other GI-tagged crafts.
Also known as Banaras, Kashi and Benares.
Where software helps: Sari traders issue silk yarn and zari to independent loom owners, then track design, loom-wise output, quality checks and payment for each piece, often across hundreds of weavers.
