Publishing is an unexpected speciality: Gita Press, the large publisher of Hindu religious texts, has printed in Gorakhpur since 1926. The city is the commercial centre of eastern Uttar Pradesh and lies on the main road route to Nepal via Sonauli, with wholesale trade, the GIDA industrial area, a revived urea plant, GI-tagged terracotta crafts and the North Eastern Railway's headquarters.
