BHEL's heavy-electrical works at Piplani made Bhopal an engineering town from the 1960s, and fabrication and machining firms in the Govindpura industrial area still supply it with parts for turbines, transformers and switchgear. As the state capital Bhopal also runs on government, hospitals, colleges and coaching, while the Mandideep industrial area to the south-east hosts textile, pharmaceutical, tractor and other plants.
