Long before Vasco da Gama landed nearby in 1498, Calicut traded pepper, ginger and cotton cloth across the Arabian Sea. Today Gulf remittances fund a large retail economy of gold, textile and electronics showrooms around SM Street and Valiyangadi, timber dealers still cluster at Kallai, and Beypore builds traditional wooden urus. Hospitals, roof-tile makers and the Cyberpark IT campus add newer employers.
