Woollen knitwear and bicycles made Ludhiana's name: the city is India's main centre for hosiery and for bicycles and cycle parts. Around them sit thousands of small units making hand tools, sewing-machine parts, fasteners, tractor and auto components that sell across India and abroad, backed by yarn dealers, dyeing houses and a large wholesale trade.
