Business in Srinagar
Pashmina shawls, hand-knotted carpets, papier-mache and walnut-wood carving have been made in Srinagar for centuries, mostly by artisans working at home or in small workshops. Houseboats on Dal Lake, hotels and travel firms serve visitors, the city trades the valley's apples, walnuts, almonds and saffron, and Lal Chowk and the industrial estates at Rangreth and Zainakote host shops and small manufacturers.
Where software helps: Pashmina and carpet businesses coordinate spinning, weaving and embroidery by home-based artisans over months, sell through showrooms and exhibitions elsewhere in India, and need GI authenticity records for each piece.
