Amul began in Anand: the Kaira district milk cooperative founded here in 1946 became the model for India's dairy cooperatives, and the town still houses the National Dairy Development Board and the Institute of Rural Management (IRMA). Dairy, food processing and tobacco trading from the Charotar region run alongside engineering units at Vitthal Udyognagar and the colleges of Vallabh Vidyanagar.
