Ships beached and dismantled at Alang, in Bhavnagar district, feed a chain of re-rolling mills, oxygen plants and second-hand goods markets that sell everything from steel plate to marine furniture. Diamond-cutting workshops linked to Surat employ many in the city, salt pans and marine-chemical plants line the coast, and Mahuva, further south in the district, is a centre for dehydrated onion and garlic.
