Business in Howrah
Across the Hooghly from Kolkata, Howrah was nicknamed the Sheffield of the East for its foundries and light-engineering shops, many clustered around Belilios Road and Liluah. They still turn out castings, forgings, railway and pump parts and fabricated steel, alongside jute mills on the riverbank. Howrah station anchors a large trading economy, including Mangla Haat, a major wholesale garment market.
Where software helps: Small foundries and machine shops take job orders from larger engineering firms and railway suppliers, so they need pattern-wise order tracking, job-work challans, rejection records and invoices that match deliveries.
