Coal from the Raniganj field, the oldest worked coalfield in India, gave Asansol its start. Eastern Coalfields is headquartered at Sanctoria, the IISCO steel plant operates at Burnpur, and sponge-iron and cement units cluster around Jamuria and Raniganj. The city is also a railway divisional headquarters and the main trading centre for the coal belt along the West Bengal-Jharkhand border.
