India's first integrated steel plant in the public sector, built with West German collaboration, gave Rourkela its economy and remains at its centre. Iron-ore and manganese mines in Sundargarh district, sponge-iron and ferro-alloy units, ancillary engineering firms in the Kalunga Industrial Estate, and cement and refractory plants at nearby Rajgangpur form the industrial base, with NIT Rourkela adding a national technical institute.
