Basmati rice mills in and around Karnal and nearby Taraori make the district one of India's main basmati milling and export centres. The city is also a farm-research town, home to the National Dairy Research Institute and national institutes for wheat and barley and for soil salinity, and it has footwear, agricultural-machinery and food-processing units and a busy grain market on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway.
