Gold from mines such as Merian and Rosebel and oil from state company Staatsolie have long supported Suriname's economy, and TotalEnergies' offshore GranMorgu project, approved in 2024, is expected to add far larger oil revenue later this decade. The capital's Dutch colonial centre is a UNESCO site, its Nieuwe Haven port handles imports, and traders, banks and distributors price goods in Surinamese dollars, US dollars and euros.
