Business in Siliguri
Wedged into the narrow corridor that links mainland India with the North-East, Siliguri is the road and rail gateway to Sikkim, the Darjeeling hills, Bhutan and Nepal. Wholesalers, transporters and warehouses here supply the whole region, while the city trades tea from the Darjeeling, Terai and Dooars gardens, timber, and services for tourists heading uphill. Hong Kong Market and Bidhan Market are its busiest retail and wholesale centres.
Where software helps: Distributors here ship to Sikkim, the North-East, Nepal and Bhutan, juggling inter-state GST, e-way bills, export paperwork for neighbouring countries and long credit to retailers in remote hill towns.
